Organic Farm
The
agricultural situation of Nepal is a dangerous and unstable one. Around 90% of
Nepal's populations depend on agriculture. The use of pesticides and fertilizer
is widespread and the extent to which they are used poses a health risk to
people and over time depletes the fertility of the soil. WF believes that
raising public awareness about the benefits of organic farming practices is very
important.
WF has established an organic farm in Bhaktapur. The farm covers an area of 22
ropani of land. The land at Bhaktapur is very rough and much work is required to
make it a fertile land. The WF is organizing training programs to the farmers on
organic farming in Bhaklapur. WF believes that the training in Bhaktapur will be
more effective as it closely resembles to the farming conditions of the rural
Nepal.
WF built one house and one cow shed at the farm. The house has total 8 rooms.
Two rooms have been allotted to the farm manager one room is to store farm
produce and one room is to store farming tools. At present the farm has a cow
-shed where 9 cows can be accommodated. At present there are seven cows. Other
four rooms are for the participants who come to learn organic farming. At
present 200 fruit plants are growing. Last year the farm at Bhaktapur produced
maize, potatoes beans, carrots radish green Spanish and other vegetables worth
of Rs. 43000. At present the farm is supplying vegetables and other crops to the
need of the shelter. The new land in Bhaktapur has the capacity to meet the
total demand of vegetables consumption of the shelter. As the land becomes more
fertile it will yield more vegetables and cereal crops.
